Workstation ergonomics - ensure ease of use

What is an ergonomic workstation like?

Proper distances, good working posture, and suitable work tools should be considered individually, both in the office and when working remotely.

Back problems caused by incorrect sitting posture and the resulting lack of movement are the second most common reason for employee absences.

One day of absence for an average-paid employee costs the employer approximately 300 euros.

Investing in workstation ergonomics prevents back problems and thus also brings cost savings to the employer.

Office ergonomics

The employer has a duty to ensure the ergonomics of office work. We are all different heights, so we don't always find the same solutions for our workstations. When working in an office, it would be good if the workstation was adjustable. An electric desk is a great solution for changing your working position during the day and always being able to adjust it to the right height. Standing work increases energy consumption and thus increases alertness. However, standing on a hard surface is not good for your back, so always make sure you are standing on a mat. Check out the standing mat .

The adjustability of the office chair is also important so that your feet get sufficient support from the ground. It would be good to be able to support your hands on the armrests of the chair or on the edge of the table. A separate, larger monitor is the best solution for observing the correct distance. The monitor should be about an arm's length away from your body and its top edge slightly below your eyes. This ensures a good position for your neck and also reduces eye fatigue. A separate keyboard and mouse also help in finding a better position.

Remote work ergonomics

The ergonomics of remote work are often everyone's responsibility, although in reality the employer should also ensure good working conditions for remote workers. The ergonomics of the workplace at home often do not meet the standards of the office, but it is possible to organize it well yourself. Think about how you could create the same heights and positions at home as in the office. Use podiums and vary your workstation. Changing positions is important, so you can easily change the chair or table you use during the day. Taking breaks is also important so that the body gets the movement it needs during the workday.

Checklist for workstation ergonomics:

  • Changing positions is important during the day
  • Adjustability: with an electric desk and adjustable office chair, you can easily make individual adjustments to your workstation
  • Stand if possible, but remember to use a standing mat
  • Remember to take breaks and move your body regularly.
  • Ask your employer to pay for suitable work tools for you, they will improve work efficiency and prevent back problems.
